Cree Announces New High-Efficiency LED Series for General Lighting Applications

Cree, Inc. today announced the introduction of its new XLamp® XP-E4 LED series, featuring industry-leading luminous efficacy for general lighting applications. The new series builds on the success of the popular XP-E2 and XP-E3 families, delivering enhanced performance while maintaining compatibility with existing designs.

Enhanced Performance Specifications

The XLamp XP-E4 series achieves luminous efficacies up to 175 lumens per watt (lm/W) at 350mA and 85°C, representing a significant improvement over previous generations. The LEDs maintain high flux density in the industry-standard 3535 package, making them ideal for applications requiring maximum lumen output in a compact form factor.

Key Specifications

  • Maximum efficacy: 175 lm/W at 350mA/85°C
  • Maximum flux: 250 lumens at 350mA
  • Package: 3.5mm × 3.5mm × 0.85mm
  • Color temperatures: 2700K to 8000K
  • Typical CRI: Ra > 80 (various options available)

Benefits

  • Up to 15% higher efficacy than previous generation
  • Improved lumen maintenance over time
  • Same footprint as XP-E2/XP-E3 for design compatibility
  • Reduced system costs through higher efficiency
  • Extended useful lifetime in thermal management applications

Target Applications

The XP-E4 series targets a wide range of general lighting applications where high efficacy and compact size are important. These include:

Downlights

Recessed lighting applications in residential and commercial spaces.

Panel Lights

Flat panel lighting for office and commercial ceiling applications.

Under Cabinet

Task lighting for kitchen and workspace applications.

Track Lighting

Directional lighting for retail and architectural applications.

Availability and Pricing

The XLamp XP-E4 series is now available through authorized distributors including LiTong Group. Volume pricing starts at $1.25 per piece for orders of 10,000 units. Samples are available for qualified customers evaluating the new technology for their applications.

"The XP-E4 series represents our continued commitment to advancing LED technology for general lighting applications," said Michael Johns, Vice President of Cree's LED division. "With industry-leading efficacy combined with design compatibility, customers can upgrade their existing designs for improved performance and reduced system costs."

Technical Highlights

Efficacy Improvements

The new series achieves up to 175 lm/W efficacy, representing a 15% improvement over the XP-E3 series, enabling significant energy savings in lighting applications.

Thermal Performance

Enhanced thermal design maintains lower junction temperatures, resulting in improved lumen maintenance and extended useful lifetime in real-world applications.

Design Compatibility

Same 3535 footprint as previous generations allows for easy upgrade paths without PCB redesign, reducing time-to-market for customers.

Market Impact

The introduction of the XP-E4 series positions Cree to capture additional market share in the general lighting segment, where efficacy requirements continue to increase. The new series competes directly with offerings from Osram, Lumileds, and Samsung Electronics, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape.

According to industry analysts, the global high-power LED market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9.4% through 2028, driven by increasing demand for energy-efficient lighting solutions in commercial and industrial applications.
